To DIY or Not to DIY: A Quick Guide for Entrepreneurs

When you’re starting a business, deciding whether to tackle things yourself or hire an expert can be a tough call. You might be tempted to DIY everything to save money, but that’s not always the best approach. Here’s a quick guide to help you figure out when to DIY and when to bring in some help.

    DIY projects take time—sometimes more than you expect. If you’re not in a rush, this might be the way to go.

Know Your Strengths:

It’s essential to recognize what you’re good at and focus your DIY efforts in those areas. For example, I handle all the design and creative aspects of my business because that’s my strength. However, when it comes to accounting, I knew I needed guidance. I’m working with an accountant as a mentor, learning the ropes so I can DIY my finances until I’m ready to hire full-time help. By doing this, I ensure that I’m still making progress while not overwhelming myself with tasks outside my wheelhouse.

    If you’re aiming for a polished, professional look or need specialized skills, it’s worth investing in a pro. This can save you from costly mistakes and give your brand a strong foundation.

Remember, hiring help doesn’t have to mean handing off the entire project. There are levels of assistance that can fit your needs and budget:

    Hire someone to handle everything from start to finish.

  • Templates and Resources
    Purchase a high-quality template that you can customize yourself.

  • Coaching
    Work with a coach who can guide you through the DIY process and offer advice when you get stuck.

The lessons you learn during this phase will help you understand your needs better and make smarter choices when hiring help in the future.
